Washington County School District

Dear Parents,

What an amazing year this has been. We were one of the very first school districts in the nation to open for 5-day-a-week, in-person instruction. We are still among a very few Districts throughout the entire U.S. that are offering full-time, in-class instruction, all sports, and most extra-curricular activities for students. It has been, and still is, our belief that in-person learning is what is best for students, and we have used that as our primary focus to do what is best for children. In fact, it has been 30 weeks since school started in Washington County, and we have not had to close a single school building in that time. In the end, everything has worked; the hand washing, the building sanitizing, and the masks have all worked!

Our hope is to end this school year on a positive note for our students. We only have six more weeks of instruction left in the school year. We do not want to jeopardize any of our remaining education opportunities, athletic events, dances, performances, or graduation with the possibility of having to go to remote learning. Our concern is that if large numbers of students come to school without masks, it could force us into a “soft closure” or remote learning for the end of the 2021 school year. What a tragedy this would be for your children.

The Governor, in working together with the health department and our State Legislature, has been very clear that the mask mandate is becoming voluntary April 10 for many entities, but will continue to be in effect until June 15 in all public schools in Utah. This is important as it provides our teachers and staff with some reassurance, as they are the most at risk; and these efforts are appreciated by our educational community.

Please remember that the hardest part is behind us, and we are grateful for the community support so far this school year. We thank you for this and are now asking for your continued support; not for us, but for your students. Give your children the opportunity to finish this school year on a positive note and make the end of the 2021 school year better than the end of the last school year.

Thank you for your support.
