I wanted to share some exciting news about student growth and academic performance at Hurricane High School.
For the past three years, we have intentionally focused on student growth with the belief that student proficiency will take of itself. Our teachers meet regularly to review data, identify areas where students need additional support, and adjust instruction to help students learn more.
One measure we use is the Medium Growth Percentile (MGP). A score of about 50 represents typical growth, while WCSD has set a goal of 65 MGP as a way to help increase overall student proficiency.
Here are our most recent results:

What does this mean?
- Math: HHS students had an MGP of 69, well above WCSD’s 53 and Utah’s 50 we are growing proficiency with a high MGP.
- Language Arts: HHS had an MGP of 61, compared with 51 for WCSD and 50 statewide.
- Science: HHS had an MGP of 64, compared with 54 for WCSD and 50 statewide.
- HHS proficiency is above the state average in all three subjects.
- HHS proficiency is above the WCSD average in Language Arts and Science and equal to WCSD in Math.
Last year, HHS achieved an MGP of 60 or higher in all three tested subjects. Those increases in MGP has improved our overall student proficiency.
These results reflect the hard work of our students and teachers. Our goal isn’t simply to improve test scoresâit is to help students learn, grow, and become better prepared for life.
