The No. 4 Tigers (7-3) reveled in their first home playoff game in over a decade and rolled against the Rams (7-4

Tigers Tear Apart rams

“Proud of the kids,” second-year Hurricane head coach Jerry Cowan said in a text to St. George News. “We’re excited for the opportunity to move on to the next round with another home game next week.”

Hurricane led 14-0 after the first quarter and took a 23-0 advantage into halftime. The Tigers’ stout defense shut out the Rams in the third quarter as well, leading 36-0 with the game well in hand at the start of the fourth.

The home team set the tone with two TDs in the first. Dylyn Gabriel tossed a 25-yard TD strike to CJ Trump and Brody Jacobs sprinted for a 28-yard TD that put Hurricane ahead for good.

Hurricane’s defense forced a safety, then Connor Clyde’s 1-yard plunge had the home team ahead by 23 at halftime.

Senior Austyn McRoberts took over for Hurricane in the third quarter, blazing the Rams’ defense on scoring runs of 42 and 50 yards.

“Austyn McRoberts led our team along with Brody Jacobs, making big plays all night,” Cowan said. “Dylyn Gabriel played great at quarterback and made some good decisions to keep our offense moving.”

“Our offensive line dominated for us!” Cowan added.

Hurricane’s skill players had big numbers and made big noise, but the Tigers’ hard-nosed defense was the group that led the way on Halloween.

“Defensively, it was a great team effort,” Cowan said. “Many players had a good game. Brad Rose had two interceptions and our secondary made it tough for them to complete very many passes.”

“We also did a great job stopping the run tonight,” he added.

Up next for Hurricane is a quarterfinal home game on Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. against No. 5 Provo (7-4).

“Proud of our coaches and want to thank the community for supporting our boys,” Cowan said. “Also, thanks to the administration and everyone involved to give us the opportunity to play the game, from the chain crew to the announcer to the clock operator on down.”
